Area of a Circle worksheets for Grade 6 (Elementary School)

The work begins by settling what radius times radius times 3.14 means and how to use it. Problems giving only the diameter come next, then semicircles, quarter circles and sectors, and finally composite figures such as roof shapes and donut shapes, built up out of additions and subtractions.

Calculating a circle of diameter 12 cm as 12 × 12 × 3.14 is the standard mix-up, and an answer four times too large means the radius was never taken. Confusion with the circumference formula, radius × 2 × 3.14, is also common, and with sectors the fraction for the central angle goes unmultiplied, leaving the area of a whole circle as the answer.

Finding the area of a shape bounded by a curve starts with this unit. The way of using a formula to turn side lengths into a surface, fixed in Area in grade 5, is extended here to a form that brings in a new number, pi. Volume of Prisms and Cylinders, which follows, treats an area found this way as the size of a base and moves on to calculating the size of a solid.
