The addition and subtraction solved as bare expressions in Addition of Decimals are set inside the wording of a scene. Addition (Basics) and Subtraction (Basics) come first, Addition (With Carrying) and Subtraction (With Borrowing) cross a place, and Addition (Comparing) and Subtraction (Comparing) add a reading in which two quantities are held against each other.
Addition (Comparing) asks for the greater of the two, the one described as more than the other. See the word more and subtract, and the answer falls short of even that other quantity. Setting the answer beside the quantity being compared against, and checking that the larger of the two is on the answer side, catches it.
As far as Subtraction of Decimals the expression to be solved lay in front of the child. This lesson has the scene read and the expression made. In Decimal Units (Capacity and Length) decimals appear not as something to calculate with but as a way of writing a restated unit.
