How many hours have gone by between a start and a finish is asked as a word problem. One format shows two clock faces side by side and the other gives the times in words, and minutes never enter either. The answer is nothing but the gap between the two hour numbers.

Although a length of time is what is wanted, the second time given gets copied out as the answer. A figure that matches the second clock identifies this. Some children take the direction the wrong way round, try to subtract the later time from the earlier one, and cannot get the pencil moving.
This is the first step up from reading a time to measuring the stretch between two of them. How Many Minutes Passed? swaps the traveling hand from the short one to the long one.
