- Sums up to 20
Sums that finish inside twenty, and whose ones place never passes ten, make up the whole lesson. The 1 in the tens place usually sits still while the ones digits are added, and the only exception is an equation whose ones come to exactly ten and give twenty. Alongside Calculation come Fill in the Blank, which asks for the missing number, and Word Problems, where the equation is built from a situation.

Failing to copy the 1 in the tens place leaves an answer stuck at one digit. Counting the digits in the answer is enough to catch it. Fill in the Blank also draws out items where the tens place is moved as well, and the answer runs past twenty.
This is the way into the unit. Not one new procedure has been introduced, and what holds everything up is the ones-place work memorized in Addition up to 10. Subtraction up to 20 then carries the same view over to the subtracting side.
