- Number of Intervals
Beads in a row are the material, and only the gaps are pulled out of them. Three word problems follow: Number of Gaps (Total, Illustrated) gives the total from the count of divider beads and how many go between them, Number of Gaps (Number of Dividers, Illustrated) gives the count of dividers from the total, and Number of Gaps (Items Placed Between, Illustrated) gives how many go between from the total.

Three divider beads leave two places between them. Multiply the count of dividers directly to reach the total and the result runs over by one whole group. Divide the total found by the number placed between and what comes out is one less than the count of dividers. Should it equal the count of dividers, the multiplying was done one time too many.
What Straight Lines and Circular Arrangement viewed from the side of the trees is looked at here from the side of the gaps. What the three lessons of Tree-Planting Problems share is the stance that miscounting one thing puts the answer out by one.
