A single equation shows one addition and one subtraction. The adding always comes first, and the work is done in two goes from the front. Three formats trace that order: bare calculation, Fill in the Blank, and Word Problems, where the equation is made from a scene.

Moving on without noting the figure reached halfway, children subtract from the starting number instead. Working the sum of the first two out again and taking the last number from it, then setting the two results side by side, finds it. The size of the gap is exactly the second number that was passed over.
Equations with mixed signs run for two lessons from here. Clearing one operation at a time from the left, built up as far as Subtraction, holds good once the signs mix. Addition and Subtraction (Subtract → Add) reverses the order they come in.
