Borrowing means taking a ten from the tens place in order to work in the ones. The unit opens with column subtraction that needs no borrowing, then covers 2-digit minus 1-digit and 2-digit minus 2-digit in column and mental form, along with fill-in-the-blank items and word problems, up to one borrow.

The most common error is subtracting the smaller digit from the larger one in the ones column, turning 52 - 8 into 56. If the ones digit of the answer is larger than that of the starting number, this is the pattern. Forgetting to reduce the tens digit by 1, which leaves the answer 10 too large, follows close behind.
When the number being subtracted is larger than the ones digit it is taken from, borrowing one from the tens place is the procedure extended here to subtraction between two 2-digit numbers. This borrowing carries directly over from Subtraction with Borrowing, and it stays unchanged when the digit count grows again in 3-Digit Addition and Subtraction.
