- 3-Digit Addition
A number of one to three digits is added to a three-digit number. Starting from No Carrying (Column Calculation) and building as far as 3 Carries (Column Calculation), the items are stacked from fewest carries upward. Besides the vertical layout, the horizontal working and Fill in the Blank repeat the same addition.

Because items with different numbers of carries follow one another, the hand is slow to switch after a run with no carrying. Once the answers are written, picking out the items where two digits came to ten or more in some column and looking again gathers the missed switches into one place.
First of three lessons in the unit. 4-Digit Addition adds a digit and with it one more carry, while the routine of adding from the rightmost column upward stays exactly as it is.
