Breaking one group out of the column above, passing it next door and only then subtracting is practiced with three-digit numbers. The stages run from No Borrowing (Column Calculation) to 2 Borrows (Column Calculation), and the same range is gone over again in the horizontal form. Fill in the Blank, where a number has to be settled for the box, is added.

The vertical layout keeps the traces of a break, a stroke and a small figure, whereas the horizontal form keeps nothing. Over the same range of items, answers turn up where the upper column was subtracted at its original value in the horizontal form alone. Rewriting a horizontally solved item in the vertical layout shows which column needed a trace.
This opens Column Subtraction. 4-Digit Subtraction raises the number of breaks by one more stage. What is worth making firm here is the judgement of which column may be broken into.
