- Sum and Difference Problems
These word problems know only the total of two numbers and the gap between them. Sum and Difference asks for the greater and the lesser separately, in scenes of ages, of numbers of people and of lengths. The pairs are built so that both come out even or both come out odd.

The two numbers in the answer come back to the total in the question when added and to the difference when subtracted. The greater is the total plus the difference, halved. Items appear where that halving is lost and the total and the difference merely added are written as the answer. Adding the two answers together is enough to notice.
As far as Price Word Problems the shapes gave one answer if the calculations were done in order. This lesson settles two numbers at once from the two clues of a total and a difference. That way of thinking is used over and over in the word problems of the grades above.
