- Area of a Triangle
Triangles come not only with a horizontal base but standing upright and leaning at a slant. The drawing carries labels for base and height and a right-angle mark, and the two figures go into the formula to give an expression and an answer, as Calculation. Obtuse shapes whose height line falls outside the drawing, and drawings carrying an extra slanted side length that is never used, are mixed in.

When a drawing has been turned, the side that looks horizontal gets taken for the base and a height that does not belong with it is multiplied in. Read the two figures put into the formula against the drawing and check that they are the base and height facing each other across the right-angle mark. Pick up figures alone and this mix-up survives.
In Area of a Parallelogram the dividing by 2 disappears, and what changes is the position of the height line rather than the orientation of the drawing. This is the entrance to the unit, and the later lessons stand on the way of finding base and height confirmed here.
