- Area of a Trapezoid
Adding the top side to the bottom side first, multiplying by the height and dividing by 2 is the procedure practiced. In an isosceles trapezoid the dotted height line is drawn inside or outside, and in a Right Trapezoid the left side is itself the height, with right-angle marks in two places. Both write the intermediate expression under the drawing before the answer, as Calculation.

The three figures written on the drawing each enter the expression exactly once. Carry over the shape of the earlier lessons, multiply only one of the top and bottom sides by the height and divide by 2, and the answer falls short of the true area. Double the answer found and divide by the height, and the sum of the top and bottom sides appears just as it is.
In Area of Rhombuses and Kites two diagonals enter the expression in place of base and height. Reading a height perpendicular to the base, common to the three shapes so far, comes to a pause here.
