Formulas and the places they belong get settled here: base times height divided by 2 for a triangle, base times height for a parallelogram, and top side plus bottom side times height divided by 2 for a trapezoid. The work extends to rhombuses and kites, to recovering a side length from an area, and to picking out triangles of equal area.

With an obtuse triangle whose height falls outside it, using the length of the slanted side as the height is the standard error. Where a triangle carries a length that is not needed, children multiply every number shown. Dropping the divide-by-2 leaves an answer exactly twice the correct one.
The formulas fixed for rectangles and squares in Area in grade 4 are extended here to triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids and rhombuses, each with a formula of its own. This idea of finding a surface from its edges widens in grade 6, when Area of a Circle brings pi into the calculation.
