- Perimeter of Composite Figures
The way round a figure joining straight lines and arcs is traced one piece at a time and added, as Calculation. Beyond a rectangle side pushed in, one pushed out, and a shape carrying both, there appear a Track Shape with a semicircle at each end, an S made by joining offset semicircles, a large semicircle with two small ones beneath it, a shape enclosed by quarter circles, and a star of four arcs facing inward.

The perimeter is only the line a pencil travels when it goes once round without leaving the edge. A side where a semicircle is pushed in or out has been replaced by the arc and no longer survives as a straight line. In such a shape, all four sides of the rectangle standing together in the expression means the replaced side was never erased.
Counting arcs and straight lines one at a time now spreads across eight kinds of shape. In the next unit, Prisms and Cylinders, the counting moves from tracing across a plane to counting the vertices, edges and faces of a solid.
