In scenes of receiving, giving, using and sharing equally, the unseen figure is set as a box, the relation in the scene is copied straight into an expression, and that box is then found. Both the addition and subtraction shape and the multiplication and division shape appear, and in each the box stands at the very front of the expression. Decimals among the figures are what mark the word problems of this grade.

Because the answer itself can be reached in the head, the relation using the box never gets written into the expression box and only the arithmetic goes down. Not one box anywhere in the expression means the work of copying the scene into a relation was skipped. Skip it and the multiplication and division shapes, where the figures grow awkward, bring the work to a halt.
In Multiple and Difference/Sum Word Problems the box stacks up two and three deep, and the difference or the total between them becomes the clue. Giving an unseen figure a place to stand is where this unit starts.
