- Excess and Shortage Problems
In scenes handing colored paper or sweets out to a number of people, the number of people is found from the leftover and the shortfall when the amount per person is changed in two ways. There are questions answering the number of people alone and questions going on to the total number of things handed out, and the answer boxes carry the name of the recipients or of the things.

In the questions reaching the total, the hand stops after multiplying the number of people by the amount for one, and the step of adding the leftover or subtracting the shortfall goes missing. The total comes out the same figure whichever of the two ways of handing out it is calculated from. Work the figure found by one way through the other way as well, and a disagreement means the final adding or subtracting was dropped somewhere.
Where Multiple and Difference/Sum Word Problems leaned on a relation between two amounts, the clue here is the gap between a leftover and a shortfall when the handing out is shifted. Tracing back a box set in an expression to settle a figure comes to a pause with this lesson.
