- Converting Units of Volume
Nothing but conversions is set out. The routes run between cm³ and mL, between cm³ and L, between L and m³, and between cm³ and m³, in the direction that climbs to a larger unit and the direction that drops to a smaller one, and the values come out whole in some items and decimal in others.

Because cm³ and mL name the very same size, this pair alone puts the same figure on both sides of the equals sign. Multiply or divide by a thousand out of habit, as the other pairs demand, and the two sides no longer agree, which shows whether the pair that needs only copying was recognized.
The quantity itself never moves; exchanging its name is the whole business of the lesson. The figures produced in Volume of Rectangular Prisms and Cubes become the material, and Volume and Weight of Water brings in a fresh partner, the units of weight.
