- Volume of Rectangular Prisms and Cubes
Work opens by reading off a drawing how many 1 cm³ cubes a solid comes to, moves to Calculation, which puts the Formula of length times width times height to work, and goes on to Capacity (Inside Measurements), where the thickness of the board is given. Whether the edges are whole numbers or decimals, the Word Problems are set up the same way.

A container whose board thickness is given has two boards across and two down, so twice the thickness comes off the outside length, while the height loses only the one board at the bottom. Items creep in where the thickness is taken off once everywhere, so counting how far each of the three numbers in the expression has dropped below the outside length brings the faulty subtraction into the open.
What is handled from here is not the area of a face but the size of a space. In Converting Units of Volume the figure found stays as it is and only the unit attached to the answer is exchanged.
