- Volume of Composite Figures
Solids assembled from several rectangular prisms, in L shapes, convex shapes, U shapes, staircases and shapes with a hole through the middle, have their volume worked out, as Calculation. Splitting and adding, or taking the missing part away from one large prism, is chosen, and the working is written in two or three tiers.

Where a small prism sits on top, the first thing to confirm is whether the heights of the two prisms add up to the height of the whole. Put the height of the upper part into the expression as the whole height measured from the ground and the overlapping part gets counted twice.
Volume leaves the hand with this lesson, and the next unit, Patterns of Change, expresses in a formula how the count of arranged figures grows. What carries over is the habit of cutting an involved shape into shapes that can be handled.
