How many there are of each kind is found from how many two kinds come to together, in word problems. Five scenes, shopping with different unit prices, cranes and turtles, admission for Adults and Children, a test whose score moves with correct and incorrect answers, and a time split between walking and running, all use one and the same idea.
The test question alone has the score lost for each wrong answer come to the points added and the points taken away added together. Divide by the difference of the two scores, as in the other scenes, and the answer will not come out. Whether the divisor in the expression is the sum of the two scores is the point.
Crane and Turtle Problems is the fourth of the six lessons of Various Word Problems. Supposing everything to be one kind and counting the gap from there is the hand used here, and in Elimination Problems two expressions are set against each other in place of that supposition.
