What this worksheet covers
Grade 6 (Elementary School) / Various Word Problems / Age Problems
Word problems reach their answers from the way ages move. Five are worked: how many years until one age is a multiple of another, how many years ago it was, when the two together come to a fixed figure, finding the ages of an older and a younger brother from their total and their difference, and tracing back to a child's age today.
In a question about the total, the gap between the target total and the present total gets copied straight down as the number of years. Both people gain a year as each year passes, so the total grows by 2 every year. Add the number of years found to the present ages of the two and it can be checked against the target.
Elementary school mathematics comes to its end with this lesson. The hand used as far as Elimination Problems, setting an unknown figure provisionally and assembling an expression, carries on into the equations of junior high school with only its form changed.
