Numbers reaching into the thousands are subtracted from. The stages run as far as 3 Borrows (Column Calculation), so items appear where breaking happens three times over. Both layouts, vertical and horizontal, cover the same range, and in Fill in the Blank the box may stand for the number being subtracted from or the number being taken away.

Where three breaks follow one another, the digit already reduced by one at the first break gets used at its original value on the second. Holding a finger on the rewritten digit while moving to the next column keeps the figure to be used down to one.

Only the number of breaks has grown, and the procedure matches 3-Digit Subtraction. Practice at subtracting from a bare expression is complete, and Subtraction Word Problems assembles the subtraction out of a situation.
