Proportion and Inverse Proportion worksheets for Grade 6 (Elementary School)
What this unit covers
When one quantity doubles or triples and the other does the same, the relationship is proportional; when the other halves or drops to a third, it is inversely proportional. Deriving the expression from a table is practiced for both, and the applications extend to finding the constant, reading values absent from the table, and two-step reasoning.
Fitting an inversely proportional relationship into a proportional expression, and answering that y doubles because x doubled, is the most frequent error. Checking whether the product down each column of the table stays constant settles it on the spot. When finding the constant of proportionality, children also divide the wrong way round and write its reciprocal.
Before attention shifts, in the unit that follows, Number of Cases, from how a quantity changes to counting how many outcomes are possible, one particular use of an expression gets finished off here. Deriving an expression from a table, a skill gained in Patterns of Change in grade 5, is narrowed here to a relationship between two quantities governed by a fixed rule, and organized under the names proportion and inverse proportion.
