What this unit covers

A figure that lands exactly on itself when folded along one straight line is line symmetric, and one that lands on itself after a half turn is point symmetric. Through Identifying Line-Symmetric Figures, Number of Lines of Symmetry and Identifying Point-Symmetric Figures, everyday shapes are sorted under both of these views.

Counting a rectangle's diagonals as axes and answering 4 is the standard error, and actually folding the shape shows there are 2. Calling a parallelogram line symmetric is also common, and shows that line symmetry and point symmetry are not yet separated. Answers that find only one axis on an equilateral triangle persist as well.

Two figures were checked for a match by laying one on the other in Congruent Figures and Angles in grade 5; here that check turns inward, searching a single figure for a line to fold along or a point to turn around. The next unit, Expressions Using Letters, leaves figures behind and begins representing a relationship between quantities with symbols instead.
