- Reading Line Graphs
A single broken line is drawn and three things are asked about it. One Graph asks in turn for the height of a point, how the quantity changed over each interval, and which interval changed most. Two Graphs lays a solid line over a broken one, and the questions move to one of the values, the gap between them at a given moment, and the interval where that gap is widest.

With two lines present, the wrong one gets read. Even with a circle on the solid line and a triangle on the dashed one, reading the line not being asked about still looks natural on the page. Hunting for the widest gap, children tend to choose the moment where both lines are high, but what matters is the vertical space rather than the height. The length joining the two points vertically is what gets compared.
In Tables of Two Sets of Data the figures that had been joined by a line move into cells divided across and down. Beyond reading, the work grows to filling empty cells by working backwards and sorting numbered records into counts.
