- Subtraction with Borrowing
Equations that cannot be settled in the ones place alone make their first appearance. A ten is broken out of the tens place, the subtraction is done from it, and the ones digit is joined back on, a two-stage procedure practiced across Calculation, Fill in the Blank and Word Problems.

Turning the numbers round to whatever direction can be subtracted, and writing down only the gap between the ones digits, is the standard error, 15 - 8 given as 3, whose sum with the true answer comes to exactly ten. Just as common is stopping once the broken ten has been subtracted from and never joining on the ones digit that was set aside.
A single lesson stands here, and arithmetic with single digits gets its final polish. Comparing Area steps away from calculation for a while, but making a ten and breaking one apart go on being used well into the later grades.
