- No Carrying
Digits are written one above another by place and added from the rightmost column, and this is where that column touch is first put to use. Every item is arranged so the ones add up to nine or less, so no small carried 1 ever appears. The plain calculations, the fill-in-the-blank items and the word problems all follow the same addition.

With nothing to carry, adding the ones together and the tens together and setting the two results side by side gives the answer. Worked in the head, that split can backfire: the sum of the tens, seventy for instance, is written as the answer with the ones left unadded. Checking that the sum of the two ones digits shows up in the ones place of the answer reveals it.
This is the opening lesson of 2-Digit Addition. In 1 Carry the layout stays exactly as it is and one operation is added, sending a number from the ones up to the tens. What deserves to be made firm here is the groundwork of lining the digits up.
