In 2-Digit + 1-Digit (Column Calculation), the single-digit number gets written under the tens column instead. If 23 + 4 comes out as 63, this is the pattern. With two carries, the small 1 written above the tens is left out of the addition, and the answer falls short by exactly 10.
Carrying a digit whenever the ones-place sum passes 10 is the procedure this unit puts to work in addition between two 2-digit numbers. Writing the digits stacked by place, the new format called column calculation, grows out of Addition with Carrying, and the same layout is applied again right away in 2-Digit Subtraction.
