- 2-Digit Addition
Writing the digits lined up by place and adding from the ones is the core skill of this unit. Work starts with no carrying, then moves to one carry and two, and the same reasoning comes back in column form, in mental calculation, in fill-in-the-blank items and in word problems.

In 2-Digit + 1-Digit (Column Calculation), the single-digit number gets written under the tens column instead. If 23 + 4 comes out as 63, this is the pattern. With two carries, the small 1 written above the tens is left out of the addition, and the answer falls short by exactly 10.
Carrying a digit whenever the ones-place sum passes 10 is the procedure this unit puts to work in addition between two 2-digit numbers. Writing the digits stacked by place, the new format called column calculation, grows out of Addition with Carrying, and the same layout is applied again right away in 2-Digit Subtraction.
