- Addition Word Problems
Word problems make up the whole of this lesson. Two kinds of scene have to be told apart and turned into expressions: Combining two quantities into one, and Increasing, where an amount joins what was there at the start. The numbers stay at the three digits of 3-Digit Addition, and the weight falls on the reading.

In an Increasing scene, the amount that came in gets written as the answer with the starting figure never added. A sum has to come out larger than either number in the expression, so an answer matching one of the two means the other was left out.
Column Addition closes here. The routine of writing with the places lined up was made firm as far as 4-Digit Addition, and the next unit puts the same layout to work in the other direction.
