- Comparing the Number of Squares
Squares shaded in two colors on grid paper are counted, both sets of them. Beyond saying which color covers more, the answer has to state how many squares more. The grid grows from twenty squares to forty-two, going through 4×5 Grid, 5×6 Grid and 6×7 Grid, and the effort of counting is what separates the stages. Nothing is calculated; the eye does the work.

Choosing the wider color and stopping there, with the number of squares left unwritten, is the most frequent outcome. Saying in advance that two things are being asked for prevents it. Others count both sets yet never subtract, and simply write down the larger count, which matching the larger figure gives away.
What gets compared moves on from length and capacity to how much ground a figure covers. Taking one square as the measure and saying the result as a number shares a root with Comparing Length and Comparing Capacity, and from Types of Shapes the study turns to shape itself.
