Three numbers are added at one go, written in three tiers of the column layout. The ones are lined up vertically, all three are added together, and only then does anything get carried. The bare equations, Fill in the Blank and Word Problems all stand on that three-tier order.

With three figures in the ones column the total can pass twenty, so the carry is a 2, yet only a 1 gets sent up. An answer that is out by ten means the carried figure is short. Skipping the middle tier of the three and writing an answer built from two of them also occurs.
Going from two numbers to three is the only new thing; adding one place at a time is unchanged from 2-Digit Addition. Subtraction takes the same three numbers and traces them in the other direction.
