- The 7 Times Table
The chant runs long and the answers resist memory. Numbers rising by seven, 7, 14, 21, are awkward to build by counting up, so Calculation and Fill in the Blank are repeated until the answers come off the tongue.

When the chant halts partway, 7 × 5 at thirty-five makes a foothold from which sevens can be added on. Without that re-adding a plausible-looking figure gets written and the answer falls off the ladder of sevens. Asking once how far the child can chant shows exactly where the trouble starts.
Second of five lessons. The re-adding to be picked up here works the same way in The 6 Times Table. In The 8 Times Table the answers run larger still and the re-adding is called on more often.
