How many people stand between two of them is what these word problems want. The two given places are sometimes counted from the same end of the line and sometimes from opposite ends, and in the second case nothing can be settled without knowing how long the line is.

Look, before calculating, at whether the two numbers were counted from the same end. Skip that and numbers counted from opposite ends get subtracted as they stand, with the size of the line never used at all. Even where they do agree, subtracting one from the other still leaves the two people at either end in the count, so one more has to come off.
Middle of three lessons. The counting settled in Finding the Position is aimed here at the stretch lying between two people, and Finding the Total widens it to the line as a whole.
