The sides of an enclosed figure are counted one at a time and the figure is put into the triangle family or the quadrilateral family. Nothing is calculated; the items are all a matter of looking over the figures on display and choosing. Finding Triangles comes as one block and Finding Quadrilaterals as another.

Treating only the familiar orientation and the familiar outline as a triangle or a quadrilateral leaves long thin triangles, and quadrilaterals turned or sized differently, outside the family. Tracing each side with a finger and counting again brings the omission to light.
This is the way into the unit. From Right Angles, Rectangles, and Squares the quadrilaterals get divided further according to the shape of their corners. Here, sorting into two broad families on the number of sides alone is enough.
