Two stretches of time are put together, or the time spent is taken out of a whole to leave the rest, and both come as word problems. Adding and subtracting are both present: the scene is read, the equation set down, and the answer written in hours and minutes either way.

The first thing to look at is whether the minutes in the answer have come below sixty. Answers left standing at seventy or eighty minutes, never converted into hours, are caught that way. In the subtracting items the minutes fall short and sixty cannot be borrowed from the hours, so the smaller figure is taken from the larger instead.
Middle of three lessons, where the restatement of sixty learned in Units (Hours and Minutes) gets used inside a situation. Elapsed Time then changes the shape into finding the stretch between two clock times.
