Since the denominators match, only the numerators are added. In Answer Is 1 (Calculation) the numerators total the denominator, and writing it as a fraction or as 1 are both acceptable. The answer box in Answer Is 1 (Word Problems), however, takes the form 1 L or 1 m, so a fraction left standing has not been brought back to the scene.
Only the numerator moves, and the denominator sits at the same figure to the very end. That stance is unchanged in Subtracting Fractions with the Same Denominator, where the numerator merely goes the other way.
