- Multiplication with 0 and Tens
Two kinds of expression that fall outside the standard tables sit together in this lesson: multiplying by zero, and multiplying by a multiple of ten or a hundred in the head. Multiplying by 0 shows up only where a product has to be written, while Fill in the Blank, which hides one of the numbers, and the word problems, which raise an expression out of a situation, are both confined to the multiples of ten.

In Fill in the Blank the box lands either on the side with the multiple of ten or on the single-digit side. Carry over the habit of setting zeros aside on an item whose box should hold a single digit, and one zero too many is attached, giving something like 40 where the answer is a digit too large. Checking that the number found for the box stays within a single digit, as the shape of the item demands, exposes that stray zero straight away.
Two lessons make up this unit, and here is the first of them. In Multiplying 3 Numbers the count of factors rises from two to three, and choosing which pair to multiply first is added to the work.
