- Calculating Angles
Angles lying along one straight line, and the facing angles made where two lines cross, are worked out without a protractor. A single shape, Vertical Angles and Angles on a Line, carries the lesson, and the word problems calculate the angle asked about from the one angle marked in the figure. Sloping lines are drawn at the tilt their figures state.

Facing angles are equal, while two lying along one straight line add to 180 degrees. Take one for the other and the marked angle gets copied straight across. Since the angles shown in the figures exceed 100 degrees, an answer obtained by subtracting from 180 never exceeds 80. An answer still in the hundreds has lost the subtraction.
First lesson of Angles, with just one line and one angle in the figure. In Angles of a Set Square two squares of fixed angles overlap, and the work begins from choosing whether to add or subtract.
