- Subtraction of Mixed Numbers
Subtracting from a mixed number splits into two stages. Calculation covers expressions whose fraction part goes as it stands, and With Borrowing covers those where it falls short and something is broken down from above. The box holds the numerator of the proper fraction being taken away, which is Fill in the Blank. Word Problems, asking what is left after use, keeps to expressions that need no breaking.

With Borrowing takes one whole out of the upper whole number and passes it to the fraction side, which leaves the whole number one below what it was. Items appear where only the fraction side is tidied and the whole number is left alone, so hold the whole number of the answer against the difference of the two whole numbers less one. A mismatch means no trace of the break was left in the whole number.
The 1 carried upward in Addition of Mixed Numbers has come round here in the breaking direction. In Subtraction of Whole Numbers and Fractions the fraction part vanishes from the number being subtracted from, and turning it into a fraction comes first.
