- Subtraction of Whole Numbers and Fractions
Three shapes stand together: the plain working, the boxed items and the word problems. Every one takes a proper fraction with a denominator from 2 to 12 away from a whole number between 1 and 5. The working turns the whole number into an improper fraction of the matching denominator before subtracting, and the box may hold a numerator or the whole number itself.

Answers appear where the whole number was never turned into an improper fraction, the numerator was taken straight from the denominator, and the whole-number part was copied across unchanged. Where a whole-number part survives in the answer, it is one below the whole number being subtracted from. Left at the same figure, the work stopped short of the conversion.
What changes here is the number being subtracted from. As far as Subtraction of Mixed Numbers one fraction was taken from another, whereas this lesson subtracts straight from a whole number. Subtracting a Mixed Number from a Whole Number, where the number taken away carries a whole part too, comes next.
