- Finding the Compared Quantity
The base amount is multiplied by a percentage to give the amount it stands for. Word problems come with the percentage shown as a decimal and shown as a percent, and they run through percentages above 100%, amounts after an increase or a decrease with profit or a discount folded in, and two-stage questions taking a part of a whole and then a part of that.

A question taking a part and then a part of it needs two multiplications. An expression that adds the two percentages first, or settles for a single multiplication, never shows the intermediate amount of the first stage. Whether two multiplications starting from the base amount stand in the expression box is the mark.
In Finding the Base Quantity the multiplication turns into a division, and the percentage together with the amount it stands for is placed at the start instead. The direction that multiplies to reach an answer is complete here.
