Fraction × Whole Number and Whole Number × Fraction

Work opens from fraction times whole number and whole number times fraction and moves on to expressions with mixed numbers in them, as Calculation. Every combination simplifies along the way, and the intermediate expression and the answer are both written. Fill in the Blank, where one numerator becomes a gap, and word problems multiplying an amount for one by a count to give a whole follow on.

In Fill in the Blank the numerator of the product shown gets copied straight into the gap. The denominator stays as it is and there is no simplifying, so it looks as though the answer to the multiplication belongs in the gap. Multiply the written figure by the whole number and check whether it equals the numerator of the product shown.

This is the first of the four lessons of Multiplication of Fractions. In Fraction × Fraction the partner turns from a whole number into a fraction, and the step of multiplying denominator by denominator is added.
