From a scene of children standing in a line, the place counted from the front is worked out from the number of people ahead, and the number of people ahead is worked out from the place. Position in Line and People in Front each come in a version with a picture and a version in words alone.

A number that says where somebody stands and a number that says how many there are get treated as one and the same, and the answer sits one out every time. Fourth from the front means three people ahead, and saying aloud whether the child counts as well brings the gap into view.
Moving to and fro between a place and a count runs for three lessons from here. Finding the Position from the Total turns the question around to scenes where the size of the whole line is known from the start.
