Numbers that show order and numbers that show how many are told apart and used differently here. Starting with Position in Line, which asks what place from the front, the unit moves to People in Front and People Remaining, and on to finding the size of the whole line from positions counted at the front and the back, in both picture and word form.
The core confusion is between third from the front and three people from the front, and the answer comes out off by exactly one. In Total People from Front and Back, children treat fourth from the front and third from the back as 4 + 3 = 7, counting the child twice and landing one too high.
Questions about the order of people or objects call on the calculation skills finished off in Addition with Carrying and Subtraction with Borrowing in an unfamiliar setting. The same reasoning widens in Order and Position Word Problems in grade 2, where it also covers finding how many stand between two people and finding a total from positions at front and back.
