The size of the whole line is assembled either from the numbers standing in front and behind or from one's own place together with the number behind. Total People from Front and Back and Total People from a Position are worked through with pictures and without, and every item is a word problem in which the equation has to be set up from scratch.

Add the number in front to the number behind and the child in the middle is left out, so the total comes up one short. In the version that starts from a place, that child is already included, and adding one out of habit now pushes the total one too high. Which number to add depends on the shape of the item, and that is where the difficulty sits.
