- Finding the Position from the Total
In a line whose size is already known, the number of children standing behind somebody is asked for, and the place counted from the front is asked for from the number behind. People Remaining and Position from the Total are the two kinds, both set only as word problems, half of them with a picture of the line and half without.

Subtracting the place from the total gives what stands behind, but leaving oneself out of the count and subtracting the number in front instead pushes the answer one too high. In a line of ten, fourth from the front, the number to subtract is four rather than three. Position from the Total also brings the mix-up of taking the result for a place counted from the back.
Finding the Total from the Position hides the size of the line and has it built up from the numbers standing in front and behind. What is given and what is wanted trade places at that point.
