Trees are set along a straight road at even spacings. Straight Line (Illustrated) comes with a figure of four to six trees in a row and has the length of the road worked out from the spacing. Straight Line (Length), Straight Line (Count) and Straight Line (Spacing) are word problems where two of length, count and spacing give the third.

Change what is being asked for and adding one turns into subtracting one. One is added only when the count of trees is wanted; for a length or a spacing, one is subtracted. Feeding the answer back the other way, rebuilding the road length out of the spacing and the number of trees, brings the length in the question straight back.
Counting trees and counting gaps as two separate things is the eye this lesson settles. Circular Arrangement bends the same scene into a ring, and with no ends left at all, the relation between count and gaps changes.
