Rounding to reach an approximate figure is repeated with the place being rounded to swapped around. To the Tens Place, To the Hundreds Place and To the Thousands Place raise the target one step at a time, while To 2 Significant Digits rounds at the third digit from the top. A number is written and the rounded figure goes into a box after it, in single-line working.

Among the numbers that round upward, only those whose digit just above the rounding place is a 9 change shape dramatically. Adding one to a 9 turns that place into 0 and sends another one further up. Let the sending stop and a figure with the 9 still there, or with its places out of order, gets written. Numbers with a 9 just above are few, so those alone can be looked over first.

This is the opening lesson of Rounding Numbers, and all that happens here is the rounding. In Addition and Subtraction the shape becomes rounding first and then adding or subtracting, with the place to round to named in the question.
