- Overlapping Circles
From a figure of circles overlapping in a row, the diameter and radius of one circle are worked out. Each circle is placed so that it passes through its neighbor's center, which lets the whole length be said as so many radii. The word problems come in three stages as the count grows through Three Circles, Four Circles and Five Circles.

Three Circles makes the whole four radii and Four Circles makes it five, so the divisor is one more than the count of circles. Divide by the count itself and the radius comes out too large. Adding the radius found as many times as one more than the count lands exactly back on the whole length.
Packing Spheres in a Box leaves the flat figure behind for spheres inside a tube or a box. Tracing a length while moving between radius and diameter is used there in exactly the same way.
